Working through my second year as a teacher I'm beginning to realize that it takes a certain type of person to be a teacher. Whether you deem that 'type' to be special or not is up to you. I honestly think that to be a teacher you have to be slightly off your rocker.
Christmas break is coming up and my co-workers and I can't hardly wait. I think we're more excited than our students.
Speaking of which I think I'm regressing into my 8 year old self. Not 10 year old mind you, I was much more adventurous when I was 8. How do I know this? Well lately I've been going out of my way to catch any creepy crawly I can get a jar around so I can bring it in for my students to see. My last exploit was a centipede. (Which by the way actually did death convulsions as it died in its jar. Both creepy and cool.) I think I'm trying to be 'that kid' to be an example to my kids to get out more and explore more, because honestly I think kids need to do that.
Sucks though I'm planted in front of my xbox sick this past weekend.
Funny enough I had another one of those great moments with a couple of my students. Before our boys basketball game a couple weeks back I had two of my students eagerly volunteer to help me do the scoring for the game. As we waited the girls talked about the video-games that they were playing on lord knows what console or hand-held that they owned. Being the dutiful teacher I put my two cents in on my opinions of which games were better and whether or not Beatles Rock Band was worth it over Guitar Hero. This got the reaction of:
"Wow Ms. E, your just like us!"
To which I merely smiled and replied, "Not quite, you're just like me."
My students eyes widened as it dawned on them. "Cool!"
We shared a good laugh and our boys basketball team lost by 3 points.
